DIY t-shirt weaving

September 10, 2010

I’m going out of town this weekend to go to the track with my bf where I will be racing against other cars and pwning them… AKA riding in the passenger seat of an instructor’s car. But at least my bf will get to race his car. Anyway, he gave me a BMW t-shirt a while back and I thought that it would be the perfect time to do some t-shirt reconstruction on it and look like the cute supportive gf on the track :]

So here we go: how to braid/weave your t-shirt tutorial by me! Luckily this worked out because I was just making things up as I went =P

1. First, cut the sleeves off your shirt. The braiding technique does not work well with sleeves.

2. Cut 2 more small strips off the sleeve and pull them to stretch it out. Repeat for the other sleeve. You will use this to tie the shirt at the end.

3. Cut strips on both sides of the shirt. Space them about 1/2 inch to 1 inch apart. You can use a fitted shirt as a guide for how far in to cut.

4. Take the first strip and loop it over the second strip. With your other hand, pull the second strip up and let go of the first strip. Continue until you reach the end. Watch this video if you are confused.

5. Once you reach the end, take the 2 strips you cut from the sleeves and tie at both corners.

6. Repeat for the other side. You are done at this point, but if you want to have a wider neck, you can remove the neck collar. Remember to pull the opening to stretch it out and “seal” the edges.

7. You can also play around with the sleeves and cut them more but I decided to leave them. Here is my final product and a peek of me wearing it.

And there ya have it! I’ll post the whole outfit at the track when I get back. Have a great weekend!
